Nowadays the Internet of things is a buzz word everyone wants to update their resume with this buzzword. Many companies are trying hard to be first in the race. They are trying to wrap the old product in a new package by the name of Internet of things. This is not a simple system that monitors and takes action.
I do not want to discuss here the common definition of the Internet of things. So, what is the Internet of Things? I hope, we are all aware of the Internet. Now let’s discuss things. Things can be anything in this world from your toothbrush to any mechanical things. Let’s learn it using some scenarios.
Do you know how many parts are there in an aircraft? An Airbus A380 has an approximate of 4 million parts. Can you imagine, how they manage or check 4 million parts? If any part fails, then you can imagine what will happen. Let’s go 40 years back, when any aircrafts lands, the engineer used to try to look at everything inside aircraft manually. Do you think it is possible to look at 4 million parts manually? I am sure NO. Now what we can do to effectively manage this. I want to say these 4 million parts do not have any sense so that they could inform us about its performance. Means that they cannot report anything automatically whether it’s good or faulty.
So, we introduced some sensors which give this device sense to understand and differentiate between good or bad. Now our parts can sense but, what will happen after sensing. We introduced some processing capability to each part to send data to us in a certain time interval or whenever we require. Now we have all information about 4 million parts and using this data power, we can watch every part and its performance and predict based on this data. Even when any parts fails it immediately sends data to the central system to take action.
So, the conclusion is how smart we can make our devices to react during failure or to predict the failure well before any mis-happening. So first we need to get data from devices and process it, to make sense to us.
IoT will play a big role in the near future which will change our life.
IoT is to make sense out of non-sense using sensors and then process that data to make it more sensible to us.
